Understanding Spinal Decompression: What Expats Need to Know
What Is Spinal Decompression?
Spinal decompression is a non-surgical treatment that gently stretches the spine to relieve pressure on compressed discs and nerves. It’s one of the most effective conservative treatments for chronic back pain, herniated discs, and sciatica — without the risks of surgery.
At Costa Blanca Movement Centre, we use controlled mechanical traction to create negative pressure within the disc. This helps retract bulging or herniated disc material, promoting the flow of nutrients and oxygen back into the disc for natural healing.
How Does It Work?
During a session, you lie comfortably on a specialised treatment table. The table gently separates the vertebrae, creating a vacuum effect that:
- Reduces disc pressure — allowing bulging discs to retract
- Improves nutrient flow — oxygen and healing nutrients enter the disc space
- Relieves nerve compression — reducing pain, numbness, and tingling
- Promotes natural healing — the body’s repair mechanisms can work more effectively
Each session typically lasts 20–30 minutes. Most patients find the treatment relaxing, and many notice improvement within the first few sessions.
Who Is It For?
Spinal decompression is particularly effective for:
- Herniated or bulging discs — the most common indication
- Chronic lower back pain — especially when other treatments haven’t worked
- Sciatica — pain radiating down the leg from compressed nerves
- Degenerative disc disease — age-related wear and tear
- Spinal stenosis — narrowing of the spinal canal
It’s not suitable for everyone. Patients with fractures, severe osteoporosis, spinal implants, or certain other conditions may need alternative treatments. We always perform a thorough assessment before recommending decompression therapy.
What to Expect as an Expat Patient
Moving to Spain is exciting, but navigating a new healthcare system can be daunting. Here’s what makes our approach different for the expat community:
Language: All consultations and treatments are conducted in English (and Dutch). No language barriers, no miscommunication about your symptoms or treatment plan.
Insurance: We work with most international health insurance providers and can provide detailed invoices for reimbursement. We’ll help you understand your coverage before treatment begins.
Continuity of care: If you’ve been receiving treatment in your home country, bring your medical records. We can review them and ensure a seamless continuation of your care plan.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Most patients undergo a course of 8–12 sessions over 4–6 weeks. However, this varies depending on:
- The severity of your condition
- How long you’ve had symptoms
- Your overall health and activity level
- How well you respond to initial sessions
During your first visit, we’ll assess your condition thoroughly and give you an honest estimate of the recommended treatment course. We believe in transparent communication — no unnecessary sessions, no pressure to commit to long treatment packages.
Getting Started
If you’re experiencing back pain, neck pain, or symptoms of a herniated disc, spinal decompression could be the solution you’ve been looking for. Book an initial assessment at our clinic in Torrevieja, and we’ll determine whether decompression therapy is right for you.
